Old Monmouth Reviews

Great choice for a family gettogether. Would book again
Daneen
Amazing property in a great location. Had the best weekend
We loved our stay here. It was perfect for a reunion of old friends. The property was spotlessly clean and had the ideal location. We even received a thoughtful welcome gift. Were already hoping to book again for next year.
Lovely historic house in excellent location in Lyme. Bedrooms very comfortable, plenty of attractive lounge space and well equipped kitchen plus big dining room.
Amelia
Old Monmouth is a wonderful house. We had 10 people and two dogs there for the weekend and didn't feel cramped in any way. The downstairs kitchen and dining room are fantastic, and the main sitting room is beautiful. Very clean, comfortable beds, fantastic location. We would definitely stay again
Katharine
As a family we had a lovely weeks holiday. It's a great house with plenty of character. Loads of space and the kitchen is well equipped if you wish to cook, which we did on 5 nights. Great Laundry area which was very useful with two young children. Would book again.
Great property for big family groups with multiple areas to be together and apart when you need some space! ! Great laundry area! Some of the beds were a little lumpy but ok for a week! Some of the showers leaked but not an issue as long as shower mat down and dried inbetween!
This is the best holiday rental I have ever experienced. Totally stunning building in every way absolutely massive, steeped in history, incredibly clean and well appointed, amazing oven and kitchen facilities. Very close to beach and amenities. My friends and I 12 in total felt like kings staying here, thank you for having us!
Old Monmouth is an amazing property of historical importance , its age inevitably means it needs higher maintenance which we found was the case , top marks for speedy responses from Lyme Bay hols. I think less furniture in some rooms would be an improvement and maybe less very well worn and much repaired period chairs. The house is extremely well equipped which we much appreciated. Thank you .
Richard
We have stayed in Lyme many times over nearly fifty years and our stay at Old Monmouth was one of the most enjoyable. Absolutely perfect for our party of thirteen.
The property was again very clean and comfortable and ideal for our large family. Only problem was that someone had put their rubbish straight into the bins without using the plastic bags, then we had to take the rubbish out and put it into the correct bags to be taken away. Otherwise everything was good and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay if only you could have organised better weather for the Lyme Lunge
A truly exceptional home. Quality of everything there and the comfort and facilities were second to none. Truly beautiful place to be with my loved ones to celebrate my 60th Birthday. Thank you.
Beautiful house in convenient location.

Old Monmouth is a beautiful home, and we had an excellent visit. Everything was perfect, and the stairs to the basement kitchen were not nearly as scary as I feared.
Carole
The location and size of the property was perfect for a large family gathering. A beautiful, comfortable home where we were able to relax. Being so close to the beach for a morning swim was the icing on the 80th birthday cake!!
Richard
Enjoyed the stay very much. House location excellent and accommodated 13 of us plus the dog easily. Maybe some of the decoration looking a bit tired but probably due to the fact that its the end of the season. Overall we all enjoyed celebrating my wifes 70th birthday at Old Monmouth very much!!
When we arrive the property had not been cleaned properly and one of the pets in the property had bought fleas into it. Once we alerted Sykes to these issues they promptly sorted the issues. For the size of property one car park pass is not sufficient as this added over 50 to our stay
Very charming and character loaded house with superb amenities. Small feedback for next change of mattresses Springs could be felt. Why does the church bell need to be tolled 5x an hour even thought the night??
We thorughly enjoyed our stay at the old monmouth, I would highly recomend it, as we were a large party it worked realy well, never ontop of one another, one has to remember it was built in 1600,s and so some of the door frames are low & made it a slight chalange as one of the party had visual disabilty, also wonkey floors , etc, but this also adds to its charm. So people booking must bear this in mind along with the narrow & steep steps, as some of ouir party love thier cooking, we were verry impressed with all the kitchen ware, knives, pots pans etc verry good quality, they looked new & unused, I asume most people eat out and the kitchenware is more used as visual rustic charm, we used the tables downstairs for the 9 of us and were all able to sit at one large table full of freshly coocked food, we even used the dishwasher once some of our party dont like them and like to wash up by hand, its an age thing the only negative point are minor, some paint in the celling started to come away simple remedial fix requierd, probably a patch repair without either letting it dry out before paiting, or not priming prior to painting, and we only had 2 purple waste bags, which made it difficukt on the last day clearing up, if their could be more purple bags please. as I say the negatives are minor , location is verry good.

Absolutely gorgeous house! Could not fault anything. Very clean, fresh and airy! All of us said wed definitely be coming back to stay at the house! Perfect! Thank you! Xx
Jeremy
The Old Monmouth is a wonderful base for a group holiday or family gathering. It is right in the centre of Lyme, sleeps 12, has lots of social space and loads of historic character. We have been coming back for nearly 20 years so are obviously biased, but it is a special place.
Verity
We absolutely loved our stay at old Monmouth and would definitely love to stay again! The size was perfect for our extended family of 10! When we did contact the office after we had a small problem they came out within 30 minutes of calling them! Thanks for a great holiday
We all 12 of us found the house fabulous ! It was very spacious, beautifully furnished and homely. So many interesting artefacts, pictures, books etc on display. As for the kitchen it was equipped with the very best aids one could need, of high quality very impressive. We only wish we could move it to the next location we will visit!!
Great house for a 60th birthday weekend away. Enough room for us all and our four legged friends. Great location, loved the log burner. Would return in a shot! Thank you.
The only thing missing was a pan x brush
Just lovely, thank you x
We much enjoyed our week in Old Monmouth and are keen to return sometime. Our group included children who loved the space and mysterious doors to unknown rooms! Some of us are older, and appreciated the comfortable ensuite bedrooms. The two living rooms provide flexibility for different activities, especially when it rains. The kitchen is brilliant, well equipped and big enough for all to gather and eat together. The history of the house is fascinating, the location is convenient for beaches, sea front, shops, lots for everyone to enjoy. Altogether fantastic for a multi generational group, great atmosphere and welcoming environment. Thanks for looking after the house so well and the opportunity to stay.
Monmouth was a lovely property, ideally situated close to the centre of Lyme and especially the beach. The facilities were very good with lots of room for our large family, the only thing missing was a Christmas tree to make it very festive!!!!
We had a wonderful week in the Old Monmouth. Fantastic House in a great location. Lovely and clean and very comfortable. Perfect our two families with teens who could be pretty independent. The Ship Inn became a regular favourite, only 1 minute from the door. Only comment would be to leave a few more purple sacks fot the bins or make it clear that the clear ones will also be collected. Luckily with 3 bin collections in the week we worked this out ourselves in the end. Other than that, absolutely fab.
This property is amazing! !! Steeped in history, quirky, spacious and comfortable! We were a party of 6 couples celebrating a 50th Birthday and couldnt have asked for a better place to call home. The location is also amazing, not too hilly, close to all the amenities. Would definitely return!!!
We love staying at Old Monmouth. The old inn was fabulous for a wonderful weekend with old friends and family to celebrate my 60th birthday in England. Facilities were brilliant. Cooking in the kitchen took some time to get used to but was able to produce a fab 3 course meal for 9 of us. Would recommend perhaps organising the kitchen to make things easy to find eg all mixing bowls in one place, serving bowls in one place etc. Sadly I wouldnt recommend dealing with Sykes Cottages, I found the inflexibility crazy eg 4pm strict check in, no shower produce supplied small bar of soap would have been lovely and after calling Sykes cottages asking for help on a few things and not even getting a reply was less than acceptable when paying a large amount of for our stay.
Property was beautiful and well equipped. We had a great time, and loved the old quirkiness combined with modern facilities. Lyme Bay Holidays told us there was not a high chair, but there actually was one. One parking pass for a property that sleeps 12 adults is probably a little tight, we bought 3 more. Perhaps state this is required in the description.,
Me and my family had a wonderful stay at the Old Monmouth, a beautiful house and incredible location
Jacqui
A wonderful house just perfect we all really enjoyed our stay. The house is beautifully decorated with little touches which made it just perfect. Would definitely stay again
What a find ! This is a beautiful house steeped in history. The decor was fabulously unique and stylish. It was comfortable and roomy , absolutely perfect for our reunion of friends. The kitchen was well equipped, it was warm throughout, loads of hot water and fab showers. There is also an extra single bedroom that appears not to be listed which was a useful surprise for us. We would book it again in a heartbeat. 2 small issues We couldn't get the music system to work . As the previous reviewer said, there is no instruction or provision for recycling and food waste, just 1 bag for rubbish. There is clearly a strict and comprehensive rubbish collection system operating in Lyme but we ended up taking our recycling home frustrating.
A lovely house perfect for our large family group, with lots of history. Just one issue for us the lack of instructions about disposal of waste. There was no information about what constitutes recyclable items and only one purple bag for such items which took us a while to find. We worked on our collective experience of recycling which was quite varied! so I hope this worked OK.
Perfect location and layout for holiday with friends or extended family . All rooms apart from the twin have an ensuite so works well. The basement is great for meals and socialising with lots of facilities for cooking a range of meals. You need to bring your own foil, oils etc as nothing is left at the house. Everything you need for a great holiday we had a long weekend and had a great time. Lots of nice pubs, restaurants and cafes within walking distance and the beach a few mins walk.
Veronica
We had a wonderful stay and found the accommodation to be perfect for our 2 families. The location is excellent just a short walk from the front and high street. We also enjoyed the spaciousness and facilities the property offered us. We enjoyed our stay so much we have rebooked for later this year.
Beautiful property, we had a lovely stay.
Old Monmouth was the perfect place for my family to stay for my sons wedding in Lyme Regis. We all so appreciated the character and historical feel to the house and it was great to have ensuites as we all dressed for the wedding. Had some memorable meals together with everything you could need to cater for 12 guests. The staff at Lyme Bay Holidays were so helpful and readily available for one or two minor issues that we needed sorting. For us it was the icing on the cake of a magical wedding weekend.
